Non NHS Services

The NHS does not pay for some of the services we provide. These include private sick notes, insurance forms, holiday cancellation forms, medical reports, fitness to travel certificates, private prescriptions, and some vaccination services. Our fees for these services, which are in line with BMA approved national guidelines, are displayed in the surgery.

Health Promotion

The doctor may advise you regarding smoking, alcohol consumption and lifestyle. these questions will also be raised by practice nurses and the health care assistants.

The clinicians will carry out medication reviews at least annually.

Private Blood Tests and Medication

Following new guidance issued to us by the Local Medical Committee, we are no longer allowed to do blood tests or issued medication for conditions that are being investigated or treated privately.

The guidance we have received from the Local Medical Committee is as follows:

If a patient is being seen privately, then everything associated with that care is private. Thus, if the specialist orders a test which is part of his investigation then he should arrange it, act on the result and bill the patient. If a specialist refers the patient back to the GP this should only be done on completion of his treatment/investigation and may offer suggestion about further management which might include blood test … it would be at the GPs discretion and he/she would have to be prepared to act upon the result. You cannot mix and match private and NHS treatment.

We have notified the local private specialists and they understand that we are no longer able to supply this service to their private patients.

To avoid embarrassment, please do not ask one of our doctors to either prescribe private medication or request blood tests requested by your specialist as we will have to refuse.

Minor operations

With Dr Cranston’s departure from the practice, we are no longer able to offer this service; you will be referred elsewhere if a minor procedure is required.

Mental Capacity Assessments

GPs are often asked to make Mental Capacity Assessments for patients. These assessments can be requested for a variety of different reasons. As GPs it is an essential part of our role that we are able to perform capacity assessments which relate to decisions regarding medical investigations, treatment and care.

However capacity assessments relating to overall welfare, finances and property are often more complex and sit outside our expertise.

The level of risk and responsibility linked to capacity assessments can be extremely high. Decisions such as whether someone’s house is sold or how their life savings are spent can depend on capacity assessments. It is therefore essential that adequate time and attention is dedicated to these assessments.

It is also necessary that those carrying out these assessments for legal purposes are highly trained and experienced in this area.

Legal capacity assessments do not fall within the NHS duties of GPs. There are other professionals who can perform mental capacity assessments including solicitors and psychiatrists.

As a surgery we do not offer Mental Capacity Assessments for legal purposes for our patients. To do so would require significant resources being diverted from our core duties as a healthcare provider. We feel there are other professionals available with more appropriate training, legal protection and expertise who can perform these assessments.

We realise that this practice policy may cause some inconvenience to our patients but hope you can understand that our priority must be to our core NHS duties as a health care provider.

Holiday and Foreign Travel Update

We currently offer NHS travel vaccinations, but not private vaccinations.

In order for us to provide your vaccinations, we require a MINIMUM of 8 weeks notice prior to travelling. Please pop into the surgery to get a travel form, or you are able to fill it out here.

If you are travelling in less than 8 weeks, you would need to visit a private travel clinic. We are able to provide you with your vaccination record if you require this.

Flu Vaccinations

Flu is a highly infectious illness caused by the flu virus. It spreads rapidly through small droplets coughed or sneezed into the air by an infected person. For most people flu is unpleasant and not serious and you will usually recover within a week.

Studies have shown that flu vaccines provide effective protection against flu, although protection may  not be complete and may vary between people. Protection from the vaccine gradually decreases and flu strains change over time.  Therefore new vaccines are made each year and people at risk of flu are encouraged to be vaccinated every year.

The flu vaccination is offered to people in at-risk groups. These people are at a greater risk of developing serious complications and even dying if they catch flu.

It is recommended that you have a flu jab if you:

  • are 65years old or over
  • at any stage of pregnancy
  • have a serious medical condition such as chronic respiratory disease, chronic heart disease, chronic kidney disease, chronic liver disease, chronic neurological disease, stroke or TIA, diabetes, or a weakened immune system.
  • are living in a long stay residential care home or other long stay facility
  • are the main carer for an elderly or disabled person whose welfare may be at risk if you fall ill
  • are morbidly obese (BMI over 40)
  • are a frontline health or social care worker
